Rescuing tiny octopi, delicious brownies and advent calendars 2015

Wow, another week come and gone! We’re so close to the end of the year now, yet it feels so far off still. At least summer has finally arrived in Cape Town, with the doggies unsure whether it’s best to sit under the fan or run through the sprinkler outside in an attempt to stay cool. Here are a few of my most recent highlights…

Saturday, 28 November 2015: Primi breakfast, Pitmasters’ lunch

Large latte at Primi on Blouberg beach
Last Saturday started off with an extra large latte for me. Just look at the size of it!
Breakfast at Primi
Husband had a Cola and this very filling breakfast bowl.
Blouberg beach
The weather was so gorgeous, we trotted across the road to dip our toes in the sea.
Husband in wetsuit
So gorgeous, in fact, that we headed home for some beach things and then returned to set up camp for a while. Here is Husband in his wet suit, about to pick mussels off the rocks. I stayed in safety under our umbrella and read with toes in the sand.
Tiny octopus
But it’s not just mussels that Husband hauled… he also got hold of a tiny octopus, hidden in an open mussel shell! He took it back to the deep blue after I’d met it.
Pitmasters on Woodbridge Island
By then we’d worked up an appetite so set off to try Pitmasters on Woodbridge Island. This is our ‘waiting patiently for our food’ selfie
Striped Horse beer at Pitmasters.
Husband tried a ‘Striped Horse’ beer. Yes, that’s actually a zebra. Teehee.
Pulled pork burger at Pitmasters
And then the food came! This was Husband’s pulled pork burger, topped with coleslaw and sriracha sauce
Salted caramel brownie at Pitmasters
For me, a Fanta and this delicious salted caramel brownie. Moist and warm and gooey, it was just perfect.

Sunday, 29 November 2015: Brekkie at home and pretty sunset

Double yolk eggs
Husband had bought extra large eggs in our weekly shop and was delighted to find they held double yolks!
Caramel iced coffee from Reload
As it was another scorcher I opted for a caramel iced coffee instead of the regular steamy version from Reload. It was amazing.
Tame chicken at Driftwood
Much later that afternoon we stopped in at the Driftwood. Here is one of the resident chickens, pottering around the tables.
Milo shake at Driftwood
I went for a Milo shake this time.
Black Label draught at Driftwood Cafe
Husband had a Black Label draught in a Castle draught glass, as you do.
Pink sky at sunset
Sunset from the parents’ house much, much later that eve

Tuesday, 1 December: Hot doggies and advent calendars

Hot dog lying on cool tiles
The doggies were very hot this week. Here is Bertie lying on the cool tiled floor after a quick dash through the sprinklers outside.
Leigh's dog under ceiling fan
Little Miss Bassie preferred to sit on the arm of the couch, directly under the ceiling fan. Such little characters, they are.
Opening advent calendar
And as it was the first of December, I could open the first window of my advent calendar. Yes, I am 31-years-old… spot the hopeful doggie just behind me.

That’s all, folks – this weekend’s set to be another scorcher – keep cool! πŸ™‚

Spring Day picnics, sunny beach walks and seminars at the Mount Nelson

Husband picked up a horrible cough last week. Add that to my studies and it’s fairly obvious that we had a quiet weekend – but that doesn’t mean it was boring…

Friday, 4 September 2015: Work Spring Day picnic

Note my floral pumps? Worn in honour of our Spring Day picnic at work last Friday, complete with sparkling wine, pizza and sour worms.

Saturday, 4 September 2015: Ribs at the Flaming Fox and Dolphin Beach visit

Apologies for the poor lighting, you can't really see just how large my bowl of 'cheesy bacon' fries is. So big that Husband and I just finished this and 200g of ribs between us. Delicious.

After that, a trip to the beach to dip our toes and soak up some sun was in order. That's Husband walking far along the horizon at the water's edge.

There's a statue of Ghandi on the Mount Nelson's grounds - I was there to cover the Media24 Magazine Summit, held in the Nellie's Ballroom. T'was a lovely day.

Friday, 11 September: Study break snack at Col’Cacchio, Big Bay

Mom and dad fetched me at noon on Friday (I had taken the day off to catch on my studies, there's just so much reading material and group discussions to add to). This was my salted caramel milkshake.

I savoured my own treat later that afternoon with a coffee lovingly made by Husband - a Nuss Plunder. It's much like a twisty croissant. Often find them at the bakery section of Pick n Pay and Foodlover's Market.

It was such a gorgeous night that we went past home to Eden o the Bay, as we had a suspicion they'd brought out their winter specials menu - indeed they did, so we opted for the Tuesday 'two chicken curries for the price of one' special. Husband also had the double Scottish Leader for R22, as you can see.

Friday, 10 July 2015: Friday celebrations at the Fat Cactus, Woodstock

What do you do when your new offices are walking distance from the Fat Cactus? Head across after work on Friday with your colleagues, of course! This is a 'mixed moggy', a margerita of lime, with a swirl of strawberry and dollop of mango in the middle.

Christmas 2013 with the Joburg rellies

Ah, Christmas time. I am fully in Christmas mode once I’ve had my annual viewing of ‘Love, Actually’ for the year. And while December’s not exactly a ‘mistletoe and wine, snowy winter wonderland’ in South Africa, it’s still a favourite holiday for many.

Last year was a different one as it’s the first Christmas in almost a decade that we didn’t spend with hubby’s family (click here for a reminder).

This year was especially special for us as some of the Joburg rellies we’d not seen in months came down to spend time with us. In addition to brother-in-law Spec (click here for more of his early Cape Town adventures), we have Gords and Natalie in the house… and their visit is all the more special as they got engaged at Sunset Beach on Christmas Eve! So, lots of excitement all in all.

Added to this, it was our first ever year hosting the main Christmas meal, but with minimal stress (mainly on my part, as I’m the worrywart in this family), we produced an excellent spread! Clifton braaied the turkey based on a combination of advice from his dad and recipes he picked up online, mom made her famous potato salad with sausage and gherkin bits, there was gammon with candied clementines, and for dessert mom outdid herself with the best trifle ever (cherry jelly, custard, a base of Christmas cake, cream and fresh cherries and blackberries, mmm).

Here are some pics of the celebrations…
