Long weekend rugby, movies and pulled-pork/bacon poppers

How do you improve on what’s already wonderful as it’s a long weekend? With chilli poppers, of course. And if they’re wrapped in bacon and stuffed with pulled pork and cream cheese, all the better.

That’s one of my highlights from last (long) weekend – see more below…

Saturday, 25 April 2015: Best chilli poppers, supporting the Stormers

It was really chilly last weekend - feel it, Winter is here. And so, a chai latte was in order when we went to the Riverway Cafe to try their famed 'piggy poppers' - R58 buys you 6 extremely hot chillis stuffed with a pulled pork/cream cheese mix and wrapped in bacon. My goodness they were amazing.

Sunday breakfast - one of the nicest French toast croissant efforts ever. This was at Ou Meul Bakkery at Willowbridge Shopping Centre, opposite the main Tygervalley Mall. Scrumptious with their homemade berry compote and fresh slices of banana.

Husband’s 35th birthday cocktails, night bus trips and dog walks to survive the loadshedding

I know, I know. Hanging head in shame as am a few days late with this blog update. The reason? We misplaced the connecty cable that’s the easiest way to transfer photos across, and it would have been too labour-intensive to email or Bluetooth the pics across as I cut down my selection from 118 options to around 35. 35 being a special number as Husband celebrated his 35th birthday this week! πŸ™‚ And so, without further ado, I present to you my highlights of the past two weeks…

Saturday, 24 January 2015: Discovering what’s really worth ordering when breakfasting at Mugg & Bean

Breakfast at Mugg & Bean, Bayside. Note suitable biscuit in saucer and shape in cappuccino froth. I also chose the 'easy cappuccino' which is a little milkier than the strong standard. T'was just right.

The whole point of this breakfast excursion was to try the Mugg & Bean eggs benedict, advertised with the 'true generosity' tagline. See here, Husband wasn't overly impressed. He said it was "tasty but not very filling and not good value for money."

Luckily, my choc-chip flapjack stack WAS good value for money - could not finish so about half of this went into a take-away box and I finished it that afternoon for tea.

That’s all for now, folks – expect a few more birthday celebrations next weekend as this weekend was too packed to get to everything we wanted to…

Evening movies in dry pools and two milkshakes under R20

Ah, weekend, how I love the smell of thee! T’was a tough but rewarding week all round, with lots to document after the weekend had packed its bags and left. We said goodbye to a dear work colleague who jets off to Italy this weekend, had aunt Jenny over for supper and met my former minion‘s pet hedgehog over popcorn and sparkling wine – Jana says it was actually MCC, even fancier! her husband won in a Twitter competition (the MCC, not the hedgehog. Twitter’s not THAT strange). The doggies were also just too cute this week (again) so you’ll see a few photos of them below.

Sunday, 17 January 2015: Lazing about and lots of amazingly good value milkshakes

The reason I look tired is that we had a late night watching movies in a dry pool the night before - and I opted for a Horlicks shake instead of a coffee, but boy was it good! This delightful version, literally topped with a cherry, from our local Cubana, only cost R20.

Dog shows and dinner on top of The Ritz

Oh packing, how I’ve not missed thee. It’s just two years since last we met. There’s nothing quite like moving house to give your whole life a shake-up. Weekends and evenings are no longer yours to laze around in. Instead there are endless glass things to wrap in newspaper, boxes to seal, box tape to mangle by getting it stuck on itself and endless towels to dirty by dragging the heavy, sealed and probably over-filled boxes from room to room until you decide which room is the designated ‘storage room’, until the panicky final days when the whole HOUSE is a storage area, and you’ve forgotten what it’s like to traipse down the passage without tripping over something cardboardy and pointy cornered. Or maybe that’s just how I do it.

With less than three weeks to go to our big move, that’s what life’s been like lately. But of course this past week we did a little more than that, especially as I had an ‘Awesome Award’ to celebrate, from my first month at the amazing place I now work – no box-packing pics below, I promise…

Fancy milkshakes and why I leave my blog posts so late in the week

The good thing about leaving my weekly blog post for later in the week is that seeing all the photos again makes me yearn for weekend… which, by the time I press ‘publish’, is that much closer. And so, without further ado, I present photos of what I’ve been up to since my last update. Key among them? Milkshakes at the Protea Fire & Ice (though not the supersized ones we had at the Melrose Arch Fire & Ice a few years ago, click here for a reminder!)

Wonderful 'healthy' breakfast concoction at Cubana in Blouberg (we were so early we were the only ones there... this is becoming a habit)

FANCY milkshakes at the Fire & Ice (yes, we went back) to celebrate our casino winnings. This is the Rocky Road, with chunks of cherry, chocolate, and marshmallow - and this is the half size, we'd still be sitting there if I'd ordered the full.

Look at the blue blue sky! No filters, I promise. This is the warm rock pool you reach when you happen to cross the beach outside the Blue Peter at low tide.
