Ah, weekend, how I love the smell of thee! T’was a tough but rewarding week all round, with lots to document after the weekend had packed its bags and left. We said goodbye to a
dear work colleague who jets off to Italy this weekend, had aunt Jenny over for supper and met my former minion‘s pet hedgehog over popcorn and sparkling wine – Jana says it was actually MCC, even fancier! her husband won in a Twitter competition (the MCC, not the hedgehog. Twitter’s not THAT strange). The doggies were also just too cute this week (again) so you’ll see a few photos of them below.
Friday, 16 January: Bassie makes us feel guilty while we eat
Just look at that little puppy face! This is Miss Bassie giving me her best ‘Mom I want some, too!’ face while I was eating dins.
Zoomed in, just in case you didn’t see how cute she is
Saturday, 17 January 2014: Bread & Butter breakfast, getting dunked by waves and watching movies in a dry pool
Tired face as I’d not yet sipped my morning cappuccino. Always beautifully presented at Bread & Butter with a heart shape in the foam and delightful little shortbread biscuit in the saucer
Husband peppering up his breakfast frittata
Husband hiding from the crashing waves by placing himself behind a large rock
Deceptively small spray…
Followed by this monster wave. He jumped in for a proper swim after this anyway, so didn’t matter how wet he was.
The nicest minion I’ve had! This is Jana. She invited us to a ‘popcorn and MCC’ movie night in her dry pool to celebrate her ’22 for the 5th time’ birthday. We had a wonderful time
This is Lily, my former-minion’s sweet little hedgehog. She’s very prickly, doesn’t like to be touched, and puffs and huffs into a little ball when she’s had enough attention
Here is the dry pool, complete with white wall for the movie to be projected onto and cosy seating options
Loved the little garden lanterns
Here is Husband, happily watching The Breakfast Club for the first time while sipping MCC and snacking on his first of three bowls of popcorn. We also had pizza and all sorts of tasty sweet treats fit for a birthday party at the movies
Solar jars and orange safety beacons dotted along the top of the pool to ensure no one fell in. (No one did)
Husband admiring Jana’s Husband’s pinball machine, which had been lovingly restored
Sunday, 17 January 2015: Lazing about and lots of amazingly good value milkshakes
The reason I look tired is that we had a late night watching movies in a dry pool the night before – and I opted for a Horlicks shake instead of a coffee, but boy was it good! This delectable version, literally topped with a cherry, from our local Cubana, only cost R20.
Here is Husband with the Eggs Benedict we shared. Tis a yummy yet extremely filling variation on polenta cakes instead of English muffin and with a creamy salsa sauce instead of Hollandaise
Much, much later that day – after I’d done lots of painting to recolour certain household goods lilac and Husband had cheered his way through the SA cricket team’s magnificent showing against West Indies – we headed off to Ilha at Woodbridge Island for a Sunday treat. This is my favourite coffee shake, still costs just R15!
Husband downing his celebratory draught
Sunday beach selfie. Happiness is.
Monday, 19 January 2015: Sunny train trip home
Here I am sitting in First Class luxury on the Metro train, with a booth all to myself on the first leg of my long commute home from work. Love seeing actual trees and clouds go past, as opposed to what the R2.50-cheaper third class option, where you stand smooshed up against half of Cape Town’s more colourful characters
Tuesday, 20 January 2015: Bertie settles in to watch some TV
Ha! Husband was playing cricket on the telly then suddenly noticed the doggies had snuck onto the couch in the hopes of watching something interesting. Bassie looks very guilty
Oh my soul I love this doggie. Look how pleased he is with himself, having crossed his long arms and settled down to watch some telly with his dad
He carried on watching even after the rest of us had lost interest.
Wednesday, 21 January 2015: Farewell coffee for Ilse at Locale, Mowbray
Iced coffee mocha creation at Locale – this was a mix of milk, ice, condensed milk, espresso and even Nutella – though not nearly as sweet as it sounds. Our table ordered 8 of them, teehee. Did not meet the ‘less than R20’ criteria but then it’s not exactly a milkshake
Such a nice saying: ‘Today is going to be a good day’ 🙂
We were all rather enamoured with the pretty light shades and decadent treats on offer – the lemony cheesecake was perfect when split amongst three of us
Group shot! Love this team. Ilse’s the dark-haired beauty in grey on the right, grinning with excitement, next to the fan. Miss her already even though I’ve only known her a few months, sob!
Later that night my parents came for dins, along with Aunty Jenny, who was visiting for a few days this week. I insisted we take a photo of the three of us before they left!
Thursday, 22 January 2015: Birthday ice cream and watermelon in the office
Such a nice treat to bring into the office when it’s your birthday – a few tubs of ice cream and some fresh watermelon chunks
PS: Before you accuse Husband of wearing the same clothes all weekend, look again closely and you’ll see it was a rugby shirt on Saturday and a cricket shirt on Sunday – I wore pink to support the Pink Drive 🙂
