Evening movies in dry pools and two milkshakes under R20

Ah, weekend, how I love the smell of thee! T’was a tough but rewarding week all round, with lots to document after the weekend had packed its bags and left. We said goodbye to a dear work colleague who jets off to Italy this weekend, had aunt Jenny over for supper and met my former minion‘s pet hedgehog over popcorn and sparkling wine – Jana says it was actually MCC, even fancier! her husband won in a Twitter competition (the MCC, not the hedgehog. Twitter’s not THAT strange). The doggies were also just too cute this week (again) so you’ll see a few photos of them below.

Saturday, 17 January 2014: Bread & Butter breakfast, getting dunked by waves and watching movies in a dry pool

Tired face as I'd not yet sipped my morning cappuccino. Always beautifully presented at Bread & Butter with a heart shape in the foam and delightful little shortbread biscuit in the saucer

Sunday, 17 January 2015: Lazing about and lots of amazingly good value milkshakes

The reason I look tired is that we had a late night watching movies in a dry pool the night before - and I opted for a Horlicks shake instead of a coffee, but boy was it good! This delightful version, literally topped with a cherry, from our local Cubana, only cost R20.

Here is Husband with the Eggs Benedict we shared. Tis a yummy yet extremely filling variation on polenta cakes instead of English muffin and with a creamy salsa sauce instead of Hollandaise

Much, much later that day - after I'd done lots of painting to recolour certain household goods lilac and Husband had cheered his way through SA's magnificent showing against West Indies - we headed off to Ilha at Woodbridge Island for a Sunday treat. This is my favourite coffee shake, still costs just R15!

Pasta at Panama Jacks, Cape to Cuba cocktails and swimming in the not-so-deep blue sea

“Know where Charlize Theron eats seafood when she’s in Cape Town? Right here, at Panama Jacks,” our waitress whispered conspiratorially during our lipsmacking Saturday lunch. We could certainly see why. But of course, that’s not all we’ve done since my last update…

Thursday, 8 January 2015: Husband and parents lunch at Fat Cactus

Saturday, 10 January 2015: Family lunch at Panama Jacks, a chilly dip in Blouberg

Mom, me and dad outside Panama Jacks. It's not an obvious Cape Town must-visit as it's in the harbour, so a little tricky to reach, but came highly recommended by a former colleague - we soon saw why!

Sunday, 11 January 2015: Breakfast at Aunt Sysy’s, cocktails at Cape to Cuba, swimming in the warm Muizenberg sea

Having lived in the Table View area for over two year's now, tis a little embarrassing to have only just visited Aunt Sysy's coffee shop at the Sandown Nursery. A delightful breakfast we had, too - note my flat white and plate of African Frenzy french toast - complete with bacon, banana, cream cheese, a berry and sprinkling of cinnamon - a steal at R30!

That’s all, folks! I know, I know – no milkshake pics (though I did have a strawberry one at Panama Jacks), no photos of Bassie, and not a single shot of the sunset! Gasp! Will hopefully rectify the situation next time round… Click here to visit the Panama Jacks website.

Two braais in a week, tongue-disrupted doggy walk and the ‘no photos of Bassie’ fail

And so, 2014 came to an end and 2015 began. How did we celebrate? As all South Africans do of course, with a braai. And another braai. And a doggie walk that was just so long Bertie decided to sit and smile and loll his tongue halfway through. See this unprecedented behaviour from the world’s most energetic doggie below…

Wednesday, 31 January 2014: Braai-ing out the old year

Look how lovely and relaxed Husband is here - the coals are lit and ready to go. The vest he's wearing has since been lost in the sea, alas... long story.

Jambo Jamaican jollies and mint mask parties with Joburg friends

I have taken far too many photos since my last update on Christmas, so have reigned myself in and held over everything post-2014 for an extra update later this week, so that the next one will have a fresh focus on 2015.

You’ve probably heard the standard Capetonian grumble by now that one of the worst things about December in Cape Town is that everyone and his aunt comes down to enjoy the glorious weather, so locals experience a price jolt and all their favourite places are packed. Luckily, this isn’t all bad news as it’s often your beloved family or friends who are part of the visiting crowd. That’s why we were ever so so pleased to hear that two of our former colleagues and one of my schoolmates who I’ve known for over two decades would be on our shores after Christmas, as it meant we could plan a few fun catch-up visits – over the weekend and evenings no less, as I was working from home throughout the silly season.

But I won’t dwell on that. Without further ado, I present to you…

Saturday, 27 December 2014: Jamaica Me Crazy with the Joburg friends

We started the day at our favourite local breakfast place - Bread & Butter. Dad says I always look so excited to see my food and coffee arrive - I am! :)
