A very Cape Christmas

This time of year is when everyone snaps into holiday mode. It’s tough for us to adjust this year though with the move, as so much is still to be decided and we’re exploring our new home city, getting to know the area and how things work here. One thing I love is that there’s so much choice of where to go shopping! And of course the abundance of beaches is amazing.

Christmas this year was spent at my Cape rellies, who we hardly saw when we lived in Jozi – now they’re just 5km down the road! πŸ™‚ We had a wonderful lunch with each ‘family’ providing a starter, main and dessert … thank goodness for those regular beach walks as I sampled absolutely EVERYTHING! Here are a few of my favourite moments of this very Cape Christmas …

It was a great day with delicious food and fun company. Different to the Christmases of past, but something we could easily get used to! πŸ™‚

The first few Cape Town escapades

What a great decision this move has been. The doggies love their almost-daily walks on the beach, the endless sunshine is gorgeous, and we’ve just found a housie to move into! Everything’s starting to fall into place and we’re starting to find our way around. I’ll blog about the new house as soon as we’ve taken some pics of it (definitely adding ‘new camera’ to my Christmas wish list) – until then, here are a few pics of our first few adventures in this lovely salty city. They’re mainly from the camera before it took an impromptu swim in the sea and ones Clifton’s already tweeted, so you may have seen a few of these before. There’s still so much to experience but we’re trying to pace ourselves as we have all the time in the world (insert witty ‘world did not end’ joke here) …

Bassie and Bertie go to the beach

So much to do, so little time. We’re loving Cape Town life – it’s so hot and there’s endless sunshine in summer, from 5.30am to about 8.30pm so the days are longgg. We’ve taken the doggies to the beach every day so far, we’ve learned not to go on windy days though as the sand stings us.

Here are some pics of the doggies’ first beach experience. We went to a doggie-friendly beach 10 minutes from home, which is usually empty. I’ve since gone and dunked the camera in the waves, so no more pics for a while, alas … but I’m getting Clifton to take lots with his phone so I should still be able to upload bits and pieces.

The road trip

Woohoo! We’re here! πŸ™‚ What a road trip this has been, from packing up our house in Joburg based on a rather sudden decision to having all our furniture packed on the moving truck, spending a final night at my in-laws and finally making the cross-country trek with most of or bedding and the Very Excited doggies (despite herbal calmers for Bertie and lots of stops along the way for walkies to get rid of some of that pent-up energy). The weather is gorgeous here and we’re loving the lifestyle so far. We’re staying at my parents’ lovely new housie until we find one of our own. πŸ™‚ Happy days!

As always, here are some pics of the trip …

The Joburg goodbyes

Just two days before our journey to a whole new chapter in Cape Town begins! I’m impressed with how quickly we can pack boxes now, slotting things in neatly, sealing and labelling them before we turn to the next corner of our lives that needs to be stored away for now. The moving truck is collecting all our worldly goods tomorrow and we’re starting our road trip on Friday, so life has been a whirlwind blur of meeting up with our favourites for the last time in this town of gold mines and golden dreams.

Here are a few of the farewell scenes that make me smile …
